Mary H. Polonus

December 5, 1917 — September 9, 2016

HERMITAGE-Mary H. Polonus, passed away peacefully on Friday evening September 9, 2016 at Saint John XXII Home in Hermitage, PA following a period of declining health.  She was ninety-eight years old.

Mary was born in Swissvale, PA on December 5, 1917 a daughter of the late William H. and Amelia (Knight) Swift and moved to Sharon in 1923.

“Swifty” as she affectionately was known was a 1935 graduate of Sharon High School where she was doubly honored as an outstanding student based upon scholarship, school citizenship, school activity, and was judged the best citizen of the school for which she received several awards.  Following her graduation she married her sweetheart Carl “Bud” Polonus on November 26, 1938.

Mrs. Polonus was a longtime devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sharon where she had been active in various groups and many activities in the parish.  She was a teacher for the former Shenango Valley Commercial Institute for several years and had been a member of the Hickory Wonders Bowling League and Ladies Gold League at Tam O’Shanter.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter Karen Maigetter of Basel, Switzerland; her son David Polonus and his wife Rebecca of Sharon, PA; eleven grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Polonus was preceded in death by her husband Bud on May 23, 1995, her daughter Janet Polonus Taylor, sister Alice Davis, and by her brother William Swift.

Requiem Eucharist will be held on Saturday morning beginning at 11:00AM at the St. John’s Episcopal Church at 226 W State St, Sharon, PA 16146 with Rev. Adam T. Trambley officiating.

Burial will take place next to her husband at America’s Cemetery in Hermitage.

Arrangements are being handled by the Sample-O'Donnell Funeral Home at 555 East State Street in Sharon, PA.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to John’s Episcopal Church 226 W State St, Sharon, PA 16146 or to the Keystone Blind Association 3056 East State Street, Hermitage, PA 16148.
