HERMITAGE-Mrs. Mary E. Atkinson, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon September 16, 2016 at Saint John XXII Home in Hermitage, PA following a lengthy illness. She was ninety-eight years old.
Mary was born in Sharon, PA on September 17, 1917 a daughter of the late Jacob B. and Edna M. (Sweesy) Hoffman. She was a graduate of Hickory High School and went on to marry her sweetheart Earl E. Atkinson on September 12, 1942. Together they would share over thirty years of marriage and their two children April and Roy.
Mrs. Atkinson was a devoted mother, homemaker, and loved spending time with her family. Mary loved to bowl, play cards, and go out to eat with her family and friends. She also enjoyed reading as well as watching bowling, baseball, and golf on television.
She was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ where she had been very active with various groups including the Friendship Circle. Mary enjoyed sewing and volunteering at St. Paul’s Home where over the years mended many items for the residents.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories her daughter April Konig and her husband Ron of Greenville; her son Roy Atkinson and his wife Barb of Hermitage, PA; eight grandchildren Liselle Konig, Simone (Bob) Morawski, Ken (Stephanie) Atkinson, Jeff (Lisa) Atkinson, Keith (Melissa) Atkinson, Jill (Bob) Zerby, John (Carol) Lennon, and Vicki Bell; seventeen great-grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren also survive.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband on June 15, 1973, brother Gene Hoffman, four sisters Josephine Spangler, Julia Hoffman, Jesse Zook, and Nellie Beil; great-grandchildren twins James and Amanda Atkinson, Justlee Robinson and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Monday evening September 19, 2016 from 4:00-8:00PM at the Sample-O’Donnell Funeral Home at 555 East State Street in Sharon, PA.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30AM on Tuesday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ at 159 Todd Ave, Hermitage, PA 16148 with Rev. David Williamson officiating.
Burial will take place next to her husband at America’s Cemetery in Hermitage.
