HERMITAGE - Leroy Edward Atkinson, age 80, passed away peacefully. He was born in Sharon on November 4, 1943, to Earl and Mary (Hoffman) Atkinson.
Roy was a 1961 graduate of Hickory High School and spent many years as a self-employed entrepreneur in the automotive wholesale business. Alongside his wife Barbara, he also owned and operated Mr. Hot Dog and Atkinson’s Bar and Grille in Sharon, both well-known and cherished spots in the community.
Roy treasured every moment spent with loved ones. He had a deep passion for racing, in fact was a drag racer back in the 60’s. He particularly loved NASCAR and was an avid supporter of all forms of racing. His love for cars extended to restoring classic vehicles, where his meticulous craftsmanship was admired by all who knew him. In 1987, Roy launched the popular cruise-ins at the go-kart track, creating a gathering place for car enthusiasts and fostering a sense of community that endures to this day.
Roy is survived by his beloved wife of forty-four years, Barbara (Graham) Atkinson, whom he married on November 17, 1979. He leaves behind four children: Ken (Stephanie) Atkinson, Jeff (Lisa) Atkinson, Keith (Melissa) Atkinson, and Jill (Bob) Zerby, as well as two stepchildren, Vicki Bell and John (Katherine) Lennon. He is also survived by his sister, April (Ron) Konig, and their children, Liselle Konig and Simone Morawski. Roy’s legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three cherished grandchildren: Justlee, James, and Amanda.
