Dorothy Marion Coles Howe, age 87, of Sharon, PA died suddenly on August 7, 2015 in the Emergency Room at Sharon Regional Hospital.
She was born on August 17, 1927 in Endicott, NY the daughter of Harold G. and Evelyn (Lambert) Coles. Dorothy was a 1944 graduate of Union Endicott High School and a 1947 graduate of Binghamton General Hospital School of Nursing. She was particularly proud of her affiliation with and membership in the Army Cadet Nurse Corps. She worked as a registered nurse for thirty-six years before her retirement from Wilson Memorial Hospital. Upon their retirement, Dorothy and her husband Harry moved to Durham, NC to enjoy their grandchildren, golfing, and making new friends. After Harry’s passing on March 3, 2003, Dorothy moved to Sharon, PA.
Dorothy had an appetite for learning, creativity, and helping others. She was very active in her retirement community, baking cakes for the monthly birthday parties, taking daily walks with her friends to keep physically fit, attending evening Bible study, and making quilts.
She is survived by her children Evelyn Herman of Hamburg, NY, James Howe and his wife Cecelia of Youngstown, OH, Ruth Jones and her husband Dennis of Hermitage, PA, and John Howe and his wife Janice of Durham, NC; grandchildren Brian Herman, Julie and Chris Owens, David and Michelle Atkinson, Karen and Tom Rose, Patrick and Judy Frank, Seth and Blaire Howe, Eric Howe, Zachary and Elizabeth Howe; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-laws Lois Coles, Frances Howe, and Nancy Howe; and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry and by her brothers Harold and Robert Coles.
Friends and family may call from 2:00PM until 4:00PM on Saturday August 15, 2015 at the Coleman & Daniels Funeral Home 300 East Main Street Endicott, New York 13760. Funeral services will begin at 4:00PM.
A private burial will take place at Vestal Hills Memorial Park Cemetery.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Sample-O'Donnell Funeral Home 555 East State Street in Sharon, PA.
In remembrance of Dorothy and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Rheumatology Clinic of Wilson Memorial Hospital or to the Arthritis Foundation.
